Southwestern Landscaping With Native Plants
Published in Paperback by Museum of New Mexico Pr (December, 1987)
Author: Judith Phillips
Average review score:

101 In The Shade
Brings intelligent life to the desert (that is easier said than done). But at least Judith gives you a chance - no more than a chance. With her wit and wisdom as guidance, and a large hat for the sun, planting a Southwestern garden is not a silly thing to do. If Southwestern Landscaping has any short coming, it's the somewhat abrievated section on garden pests endemic to the area. For example, I had a problem with mad dogs and Englishmen. I was forced to take the matter into my own hands.

Speaking in Tongues
Published in Paperback by HAWK Publishing Group (28 June, 2000)
Author: Linda Phillips Ashour
Average review score:

an enjoyable surprise
Speaking in Tongues is a novel that I bought on a whim, knowing nothing about it. I simply picked it up at random, wanting to try something totally new to me. What a wonderful surprise this book was. It is a fascinating story of a married woman living in France. The protagonist is a fully developed character created with warmth and insight, and delightful humor. Linda Ashour writes powerfully and wittily; she deserves a wider audience ready to appreciate a rich reading experience.

Average review score:

I Love This Spelling Book
As a homeschool Mom, I have never been happy with any of the spelling books I've used in the past. They were always too much. This book is just right -- the right words, the right amount of work, and the right content that holds my son's attention. I use "The Well Trained Mind" method and this works beautifully with it.

Statistical Thinking, 2/E: Telephone & Beyond
Published in Hardcover by W.H. Freeman & Company (April, 1982)
Author: John L. Phillips
Average review score:

Conceptual Introduction
This book does not teach you how to "do" statistics, which would mean doing a lot of mathematical manipulations and handling formulas and checking tables, etc. Rather, this book is about what needs to be understood to use statistics effectively, what statistics is about. Come to think of it, this makes a lot of sense, because today, we have lots of aids to do the manipulations for us. We don't really need to know the formula for computing stadard deviation, when excel can do it for us, with a few clicks of the mouse.

The book reads sequentially. Each chapter assumes the reader has a firm grasp of the preceding ones. So, if you do not have the time to read a book sequentially, this book is probably not for you. This book does not assume that you'll already have know something about statistics. It starts more or less from scratch.

Steel Battalion Official Strategy Guide
Published in Paperback by Brady Games (22 November, 2002)
Authors: Bradygames and Phillip Marcus
Average review score:

Great strategies and awesome art
Face it, if you bought Steel Battalion, you'll want to make sure you can maximize your investment in the game. I suggest this guide for every Steel Battalion owner...not only is the art amazing, the maps and strategies are useful as well. Don't look for step by step walkthroughs...that's not what this guide is about. Instead, you are given general advice and tips as to what actions you should take in each mission and which mechs are best suited for that particular stage. The authors do a good job of not spoiling the game for potential SB owners...there's enough here to get you on track and a small taste of what's to come.

Steps to Reading Proficiency
Published in Paperback by Wadsworth Publishing (January, 1992)
Authors: Anne Dye Phillips and Peter Elias Sotiriou
Average review score:

A "must read"...if you want to be a masterful reader!
Reading has been...and will always be...my passion, and I read voraciously. Hence, I always scout for and pursue high-performance reading techniques. It is now my lifelong learning pursuit. I approach them with an open mind as my primary focus is on what works for me, with playing, exploring and experimenting as my evaluation tools.

This is one book, I must say, contains the best and most comprehensive collection of text organisational (writing) patterns I have seen so far. In a nut shell, understanding and mastering text organisational (writing) patterns at the onset after your initial preview allow you to navigate the given text at very high speeds.

In total, this book introduces eleven (11) patterns:

- enumeration pattern (listing);
- time sequence;
- example pattern;
- cause & effect pattern;
- problem & solution pattern;
- compare & contrast pattern;
- spatial pattern;
- definition pattern;
- process pattern;
- classification pattern;
- description pattern;

In any kind of reading, a quick preview is imperative. This book also introduces you to a variety of preview techniques, just like any other reading technique books.

Understanding the text organisational (writing) patterns makes your preview much more efficient and effective.

All information has shape. Just take a close look at the word INFORMATION. The root word is FORM. So, if you want to read fast, you must learn to shape or form your understanding quickly. If you can see this FORM at the onset, it becomes much more easier for you to understand how the information in the given text is organised. With this understanding, it become easier and also faster for you to pick out the key ideas or details.

The author has done an excellent job in illustrating all the eleven text organisation (writing) patterns. There are also a lot of reading exercises or practices for you to play, explore and experiment with the patterns. They are really worth the cover price for the book.

I teach kids and teens as well as adults how to read at very high speeds. In other words, I help them to survive...and thrive in...the information overload! From my own personal and professional experiences, the purpose of reading is to GATHER INFORMATION...IDEAS to be more precise. I always advise them ...using Pareto' Law...that 80% of the meaning of any given paragraph are often captured in only 20% of the words...these are the key ideas! (In fact, I have read from somewhere...an empirical study...that 4 to 11 % of any given text contains the key ideas!)

Knowing how to discern text organisational (writing) patterns in the first instance gives you the turbo boost to locate the key ideas very quickly and eventually navigate the reading texts at very high speeds.

If you combine these reading techniques with mindmapping or using graphic organisers and/or other visual tools, your ability to organise and synthesise ideas...and generating insights...from all your reading become very powerful.

So, if you want to be a masterful reader, just like me...this book is a must read!
